Faces of KE: Koh Zhao Ming

For years I have asked myself: do you excel in something because you love what you do, or do you love it because you excel at in? In the eyes of Zhao Ming, the recipient of last year’s Outstanding KEVIIan award, what matters is that you enjoy whatever you choose to do; acknowledgement is just the icing on the cake. In the midst of intense IHG training, he finds time to tell us what it takes to be an Outstanding KEVIIan.

Tell us more about yourself.

I’m currently a year 3 Mechanical Engineering undergrad. In year 1, I was the Tennis captain and I joined all the racquet sports as well as the Malaysia Night Comm and the Elections Comm. In year 2, I was the JCRC Sports Director and still involved in all the racquet sports. I’m slightly phantom this year, starting with RAG at the start of last semester. I’m still in all four racquet sports but I also joined Dance, which is something new for me.

Only slightly phantom this year?

Only slightly phantom this year?

Could you tell us about one of your fondest memories in hall?

Most recently, we had a dance performance in Sem 1’s Night of the Arts. It was something new that I had never tried before, not just in KE, but in my entire life! Having been able to dance in front of a lot of people is sort of like an achievement to me. I enjoyed it a lot.

There’s a million things I haven’t done but just you wait.

In your opinion, what does it take to achieve the Outstanding KEVIIan Award?

To be honest, I did not know about the existence of such an award until I was called for an interview! I would say that you need dedication and commitment to hall and what you do, and also responsibility. Most importantly, you have to enjoy what you do.

What does receiving this award mean to you?

This is the most prestigious award in KE, so I am honoured to have been awarded it last year. I am extremely thankful to the SCRC and all the people who nominated me. It’s sort of an acknowledgement for what I had done last year.

Any advice for anyone who wants to become an Outstanding KEVIIan?

I don’t think you can alter your behaviour in such a way that you will get this award. Just enjoy what you do, make sure that you are happy with whatever roles you take up. Don’t take up responsibilities just because of an award. Just have basic commitment in whatever you do and try to make your presence felt by others.

Any closing comments?

It’s the IHG period now, so as an athlete, I urge all KEVIIans to go down and support your friends and fellow KEVIIans. For all the athletes: good luck and all the best!
