We are finally reaching the end of the nerve-wrecking IHG season and I am actually very privileged to join just in time to cover the finals. This match is the first table tennis game I’m watching (you can tell I’m not a very sporty person) and it is also my first of few attempts at writing a sports article. “What do I have to take note? What should I expect? How should I write it? How do you even understand the game?” These were thoughts and questions looming in my mind as we (the supporters) waited for the game to start. At almost 8.30pm, the players anxiously warmed up for their game while I, on the other hand, got ready to absorb as much information from the game as possible.

This was the team’s line up for the game:

1st Singles: Jia Ying
1st Doubles: Yan Ting / Kym
2nd Singles: Ling Yue
2nd Doubles: Siow Ying/ Yu Qing
3rd Singles: Shane (forfeited in KE’s favour)

1st Singles: Jia Ying (Win: 11-3, 11-8, 11-7)

The match started off with Jia Ying (our renowned star player), who swiftly secured her first game. It was shockingly fast. She did not leave any mercy to her opponent during the game with her fearsome, yet composed, attacks. The only time that our fighter took a break was when TH called for a timeout when the score was 6-2 to KE. The timeout only gave our player the opportunity to rest and decide the strategy to end the game in the quickest manner. Good job Jia Ying; it was very impressive!

1st Doubles: Yan Ting & Kym (Win: 11-6, 12-10, 8-11, 11-7)

Next up is our first pair, Yan Ting and Kym. The pair finished their opponents off quickly in the first set. The second set was nerve-wrecking as our pair fought neck to neck till 10-10, but eventually we were victorious as they pulled the point difference apart with their teamwork and smart strategy. Despite losing the third set, our pair were undeterred and returned to secure the game point. This was the most memorable game because the opposing team were keeping the atmosphere very intense by repeatedly shouting “” (“kill”) whenever they managed to earn a point throughout the entire game, perhaps their way of expressing joy or intimidating their opponents. But maybe shouting during the game is not all that magical.

2nd Singles: Ling Yue (Lose: 13-15, 11-5, 11-13, 11-6, 3-11)

At about 9pm, more and more supporters from both halls surrounded the arena and somehow, the atmosphere became tenser by a thousand fold.

Next up, we had our captain, Ling Yue, taking TH one on one. The first set was the peak of the entire match because it was a neck to neck battle, from 10-10 to 13-13 and we eventually lost to TH by 2 points. Throughout the battle, she made sure that it was tough for TH to earn a point. The intensity was so strong that even I was no longer pre-occupied thinking about my article, but was totally immersed into the game. For the last set, although the difference in the scores put Ling Yue in great disfavour and TH concluded the game, her determination and sheer grit made KE proud.

2nd Doubles: Yu Qing, Siow Ying (Win: 11-7, 11-8, 11-5)

The duo, Siow Ying and Yu Qing, had so much chemistry that once they stepped in front of the table, it was obvious who was going to take home the championship. In the midst of the first set, there was some conflict over the ball’s placement and the point was unjustifiably granted in favour of TH. Our duo did not hence lose heart and they swiftly brought the set to a win. In the second set, there was a high possibility that TH might win the game when the points came to a tie at 8-8. From here, our pair went all offensive and denied TH their chance, bringing the set to a win at 11-8. The last set was even more amazing. It was short and sweet because our opponent gave away 5 points mere seconds into the game (5-0 to KE) but they did not hence lose their focus or became over-confident. With the same consistent and calm offenses, they brought glory to KE.

Tired; but our pair was not going to let fatigue take over them

It is really an honour to witness the TT girls’ determination and KE’s love and support through this very amazing game.

Congratulations girls, all of you are champions!
